Whoever and however there is in existence that manifests and broadcasts the phenomenal grandeur and sublime glory of the Supreme Lord should be known to be under His direction and an infinitesimal portion of the tejas or power of Lord Krishna’s vibhuti or divine, transcendental opulence. Out of His inconceivable potency all His vibhuti manifest from but a fraction of His power

Ramanuja’s Commentary .. Lord Krishna now informs that whatever has been confirmed as the reality regarding His vibhuti or divine, transcendental opulence is extremely minimal. In whatever condition the material creation may appear, be it the absolute reality of the supra subtle unmanifest state of the brahman being the spiritual substratum pervading all existence or be it the relative reality of the supra gross manifest state possessing the five elements. Whether existing temporarily or in perpetuity, the total creation comprised of cit or consciousness and acit or unconscious beings, objects and substances are structured in such a way as to not conflict with each other and never to go contrary against the Supreme Lord’s will. The blessed Parasara the father of Vedavyasa revealed in the Vishnu Purana that the whole creation is maintained by 1/10,000 part of 1/10,000 part of Lord Krishna’s inconceivable power.

..DyAyan krtE yajan yagnal:trEtAyAm dvAparE arcayan yadapnOti tadApnOti kalou sankIrtya kesavam…this talks about the means for liberation–In krta yuga it was meditation-very complicated..dhyanam should be like the stream of oil pouring out,with all senses controlled both internally and externally –without any break..In trEta  yuga the means got simplified–it was oblations–still complicated but only physical and not mental..In dvApara yuga it was further simpilfied to just arcana–with purity.The purity refers to not intending to get any fruits or palan, but just for the pleasure of doing the same.Like Andaal saying “thooyomaay vanthom..thoo malar thoovi thozluthu “..like Vithura’s and Maalakara’s bakthi..Now in kali yuga ,the means is just oral nama sangIrtanam.. vaay nuniyaaha sonnaalum-vaayinaal mattum paadi, manathinaal sinthikkaamal-erunthaalum athey palan allikkum.. Understanding  the meanings -kesavaaya namaha-we belong to kesavaa-understanding this relation with deha-atma viveham will add to the pleasure of nama sangIrtanam..

.Just like the bitter medicine for cure, and the elixir for enjoyment, nama sangIrthanam eliminates the pain of samsara and fetch us mOKsham-absorbs us in bliss..

..As we realise atman’s subservience to paramAtma–with clear gjanam of ananyaarha seshadvam-exclusive  depandance  on Him and paara danthiriyam-living only for Him and doing every thing only His pleasure..we engage in nama sankIrtana..Recall” stavya:stavapriya:stOtram”..We can never praise Him  with any thing,unlike those here, who could be praised with more adjectives..there is nothing that is not in Him, with which we can praise Him.. The stotras are only for purifying our tongue..Swami naratted the story of mottai thalaiyan, who gave away lots of prize on hearing about his kuzal azlahu..

..His nAmas fill the vacuum of His physical absence.He is like 24ct gold-too maleable. His namas are like 22 ct gold-fit for ornaments .Even when He is away His namAs are close -as we saw from the episode of draupadi-“avan thoorasdan aanaalum, ethu kitti nintru vuthavum”-even, though He was at far away in Dwaraka,when she called, His namAs blessed her clothes..When He is nearby, He takes away clothes as we saw with gopies..Andaal also says “paadi parai konndu..aadai vuduppom “..

..All are elligible to chant namAs..The only qualification reqd is that no other qualification is reqd for this..this itself is a qualifier..Just as for bathing in Ganges, no other pre-cleansing is reqd..Swami naratted the story of a wicked son slapping his mother..still he shouts out “ammaa” in pain..”kai nonthaal “ammey “yenkirathey praapthi”..the mother still was happy that the son called out her name without forgetting her..Sisubaalan,obtained mOksham, just because even during blaming he uttered His namas..

..It is not mendatory to know the meaning of each nAma : it works even without that..fire burns when touched irrespective of whether we know that it would burn or not..”kedum idar ayavellaam kEsavA enna”-just by saying kesava once, all accumulated paapams vanish–just as we light a candle in a dark cave where the darkness vanishes ..

..Swami gave out lots of tetimonies ..the story of AjAmila..it is a misconception that nama sankIrtana is recurring medicine that allows us to repeat mistakes..for AjAmila,saathu samaaham-the company of baagavathaas and his repentance led him to liberation..

..The episode of Mudgala–listening to the conversation between him and Yama darma rajan  that kesava is kilasa naasini–“narahamey svargam aanathu”-the hell itself transformed into heavan..appadi patta “naamangall vudaiya nambi “yenkiraar Thondar-adi-podi aazlvaar.He also says in “kavalil pulanai..nin  naamam kattra aavalippu vudamaiyaal.. naman thamar thalaikall methey naaval ettu vuzli tharuhintrom”-we are dancing over the heads of yama thothars…Similarly kshatra bandhu–kesavaa yenna paraangathi kanndu konndaan.Thirumazlisai aazlvaarum “Naman tamarAl ArAyap pattu ariyAr kandir “-yenkiraar..In “Paccai mA malai ” paasuram evan moksham was given up for the joy of chanting nAmas-“Achudaa !Amara yerey !Aayar tham kozlunthey! yennum etchuvai thavira yaan poy endira loham aallum atchuvai perinum veunndeyn ” yenkiraar.”.yeraar muyalai vittu kaakai pin povatho” yenkiraar Thiru Mangaiyaarum..–desa,deha, kaala vaasi entri engeyey, entha vudambodey, eppozluthey anubavikka koodiya per -amutham nAma sangeIrthanam..In Mukunda maalai Kulesekarar also says even if he goes to naraham, as long as he chants namavalli it is ok.

..Sri Vishnu sahasranama-the cream of mahabharata as well as appendix for geetha-talks about nAmas being the means  for  bakthi which will help all of us to reach Him..Sri Krishna also was sitting and listening to the canversation..After listening through over 999 namas, Yudhishtra was looking up to have the glance of ParamAtma..Beeshma had to remind him that He is none other than Devahi-puthiran, seated next, whom the Paandaavas considered as a cowherd boy and just ther votti..

..The nAmas in Vishnu sahasranAma explain one  or more of the following.

.1.Soroobam-His essential nature -like KAraNa-the sole cause for all..

2..Roobam-the divine form-like PuNdarIkAsha-One with lotus like eyes.

.3..Gunnas-qualities-like Vatsala etc  and..

 4..Viboothi and seshditham -His wealth and His leelaas-like VisvamUrtE..

  ..The namavalli “Kesava “is one which covers all the four..control of all including -ka=piraman easa=rudran..this is His Soroobam..He is Kuzlal azlahan-kesi..roobam..He is kilesa naasan-his gunnam and finally He killed Kesi yentra arakkan-his seshditham..

..Nama sangIrtana 1. removes fear,

                             2.cures diseases,

                             3.,clears confusion,

                              4.improves wisdom,

                              5.nurtures bakthi,

                              6.blesses  wealth needed for service..and much more..

..Siva’s reply to Parvati suggeting Rama nAma as equal to all thousand nAmAs..per aayiram vudaiya nambi-We should never trade namAs for low human ends..We should chant for the pleasure of chanting-as an end by itself and not means.Swami naratted the story of the fisher man finding a diamind-selling to a trader just for a few dollars -who sold to a king for over a million dollars -who enjoyed wearing that for himself and for his wife.

..Let us all keep on chanting His divine nAmas, and dance around..just as Nammaazlvaar’s Aruli seyal..paadi ezlunthum, paranthum,…kumbidu nattam aadi kohu kattunndu vuzlantru ..veethikall thorum thulli ..ninaithu aadi neer malhu kanninaraahi..vulahor sirikka nintru aadi–avarkall sirippaiyey thaalamaha konndu aadi..antha per enbathai konndaaduvom..

..Dear Bakthas,

Here is another short summary of our Swami’s Geetha vubanyasam at sri Mahalakshmi temple in Boston…In just 70 minutes time, he took all of us nearer to Bagavan, who with over 700 slokas was trying to get us all back inti His fold but could not succeed.

..Surithi, Smirthi are like elixer and medicine..Among these, Geetha-Krishna’s songs, has unique place..

..Karma yoga is prescribed by Sri Krishna as a must for all..let us all practice..Aallvandaar summaraises the entire Geetha in one slokam..let us all try to memaraise this ….Svadharma gnAna vairAgya sAdhya bhakti Eka gOcara :narAyaNa param brahma gIta sAstreE samIrita..this is the essence of Gita..Practice of one’s prescribed karma yOga with detachment,realising the atman’s essential nature leads us to bakthi,NarayaNa ,the supreme is attained only through the bhakti..

..There are clearly defined five steps.These are

1..realise that Atma is different from the body and eternal..it is subservant and dependent on paramAtma..deha-atma viveham  purinthu, seshadvam, paara danthiriyamum therinthu–this is  suva dharma gjanam..

2.next step is practicing the prescribed varna asrama dharma..with three tyAham ..-a.kartrtva buddhi tyAga,b.mamata tyAga and c.phala tyAga.. all these are essential …Swami gave the examples where for all good things done we ,ourselves take full  credit and for bad things we point fingers at others.. for doing any thing paramatma, jeevatma,manas, piraanna, limbs have to work together..We should not have our mind in the fruit of our actions..For example, if one pounds paddy to get rice-vulakkai kuthi-one lets out vervai in the process..that is by-product…. Baghavan is like wish-granting creeper-thannaiyey tharum kaamadenu..He will gladly come to us if we ask Him,unlike kamadenu….So nevar pleads any thing to Him. He knows what is good for us and will take care of us.

.3.the third step is Atma sakshAtkAra-complete realisation and vision of the atman..This is the inter mediate stage on our march towards Him..Karma yoga is a must even to a gnAna yogi and bkakti yOgi..they have to sustain their body first to practice them..for which they have to eat and sleep..for which they have to earn,cook, and do many more -these are part of karma yOga.

..4.the next step is practicing bhati yOga without giving up karma yOga.this will remove our adi kala papa-which are obstackles

..5..when all our prArabdha karmas are destroyed-this make take many births-we attain mOksham.Swami explained that karmas-both paapam and punnyam -are classified into sanchita-and prArabdha..We are trying to eliminate the latter but likethe frog trying to  climb up the hill ,by leaping up 3inches and immediately falling back 4 inches, we are adding on more karmas in the process..

.Compare with gnAna yOga, karma yOga  is simpler,..we are used to it from birth-like the baby crying and craawling by itself-due to vaasanai from previous births..the probability of failure is less in karmayOga.-this is because for gnAnayOga, endiyams have to be  under control–endiriya jayam is very difficult…and in succeeding births, we can continue from where we left in the previous birth–like marks are granted  evan for the steps in exams, evan though the final answer is wrong–

..Swami quoted some important slokas from gItA..a,karmaNaiva hi samsiddhim AstithA;janakAdaya–evan Janahar -shadriya king-followed karma yogam, evan though he was well versed in gnAna yOga..Rama did not praise his father in law and so  Krishna did this to fulfill his desire..b.Niyatam kuru karma tvam karma jyAyO hi akarmaNa(gnAna )..karma yogam is better than gnAya yoga.c.karmaNyEva adhikAra tE mA phalEshu kadAcana mA karma phala hEtu:bhU:mA tE sanga :astu akarmaNi (nan performance of karma )..Swami indicated that because Arjunan did not change his mind initially we got Geetha..where as Kaikeyi changed her mind after Mandothari’s talk(intially she said Rama is also her son and hence was happy about his Battaabisheham,bur latter was convinced by the wicked servant ) and hence we got Ramayanna….d.Imam vivasvatE yOgam proktavAn aham avyayam vivasvAn manavE prAha manu :ishvAkavE abravIt–Krishna says that what He is preaching is an ancient one, which He did for son god 28 chadur yugams back and was paassed on to Manu, Ishvaahu..

.In order to facilitate all to attain mOksham Sri Krishna categorised them into four varnas–only based on Gunnm and occupation.cAtur varNyam mayA srshtam..He  never discriminated.. in fact ,He says that the last varNa  came from His lotus feet,which all are trying to reach..Unfortunately, more divisions and discriminations came along which were as  Krishna says not by Him..

..Bakthi is the vehicle to mOksham..as analogy, Swami mentioned  a goods vehicle proceeding  to a destination,..on the way to remove snow,one needs snow mover showel..similarly, to remove prArabdha karma,which obstructs our path to mOksha, Bakthi yOgi needs to perform karma yOgam also..

.Routine Karmas are sandhyA vandana,panca mahA yagna (brahma, deva,manusha, booda, pithru )..These must be done by all without fail..Performing these may not grand us any new fruits, but non performance of these will surely block our way to mOksham..

..Additionally He lists 13 types  of karma yogam from 4-25 to 4-30 slokas.

.We should choose to perform  one or all of these,regularly,for purity of mind and removal of paapams.these are listed below..

1.Deva Pooja -dailyworship–Saligraamam ,vigraham or pictures in our homes.We should perform with all three faculties-body,speech,and mind..

2.Offering sacrificial materials to Agni through yagnas..

Yagna -yaja deva pUjAyAm.Agnou tishthati… viprANAm hrdi tishthati.. yOginAm pratimAsu aprabuddhAnAm sarvatra samadarsinAm ..thus deity worship is the simplest method..

3..endiriya jayam-offer sensual organs like ears and eyes to the fire of sensual control-thrushti vithi..

4..offer the objects of pleasure like sound and taste to the fire of five senses..we have to redirect the senses towards the divine form ofBhagavan..

5..mano jayam-control pf manas-meditating on His supremacy ,detaching from material pleasures,using atma gjanam

6.performing deva archana, yaga, homa,dana with wealth earned in the right way..Swami gave the example of wind mill..which delivers power without any change either in wind or for the mill..the more daanam,one does from his earning, the more pleasure and peace of mind he gets ,which will help him to earn more.

7..some perform penance by subjection their body to pain–kAyakIEsam and fasting–Baghavaan does not like His children ,undergoing these pains..

8.pilgrimage to holy places and rivers..try to spend more time to know about the place and not rush through likevisiting exhibition..anubavithu sevikkanum–paarthuttu poha koodaathu.

9..chanting vedas..atleast some portion daily..

10..enjoy the meanings, commentaries, research and muse over -munnor mozlintha muraikall..

11..control of food habits, pranayama-synchronise apana vayu with prana vayu-Puraha-deep inhaling

12..synchronise Prana vayu with apana-Rechaka-exhaling

..13..Kumbaha-holding the breath..control the pranavayu from going upwards and apana downwards and synchronise all  their pranas in them..

We normally breath-in and breath -out  16 times a minute..by control, if we can reduce to 12 times, we will be healthy..

Concluding, we should all perform our routine prescribed karmas and choose to do one of these 13 types of karma yOgam..Gradually ,we will automattically start to perform more and more ..and  move towards Bakthi maargam ..which will lead towards Him…Surely by listening to more of Swami’s out-pourings  we will march towards Him .

.Here is a short summary of swami’s out pouring in Boston Sri Mahalakshmi temple.

Our Sri-vaishnavam has clear defined roles for Him, Her and ourselves.”Sri”-always come first as in Srinivasan or Thiru maal..He is unfailing means for liberation.. He is UpAya-means to take us all towards Him..Sadhana vuAyams are karma, gjana and bakthi yogam..Saadhya upAya is He himself..We should perform sarannaagathi–puhal ontrum ellaathaal vun adi keezl puhuntheyn -yentru..

.He is full of VAtsalya-like the cow cleaning all  malam, moothram,raththam etc from the calf just born, by its mouth ..Only after knowing that He hasthis vAtsalyam in abundance , we will not be afraid to approach Him with all our heaps of sins,since He will  surely show us parental compassion.

He is full of Souseelya-just as Rama counted Guhan, Sugreevan  and Vibeeshannan as His brothers along with Lakshmanan, Baradan and Shadrugnan..He is magnanimous to mix with lowly people like us.

..He is Swaami-complete owner of all of us ..He will go to any extend to restore all His properties..That is why He created saastras,our limbs..but if we mis use them, He will  LOSE hIS SLEEP constantly stand as in Thirumalai and try to win over all of us back into His fold.

..He is full os sowlabhya-easy access..

..But all these kalyaanna gunnangall are masked by His  Svatanrya-unquesitionable independance or will..Just as sea water with lot of salt is not drinkable…The rule books are shastras and vedas..He will abide by these.He will punish the sinners as per the rule.

..Here is the need for the mediator..Sri  Mahalakshmi plays this role effectively.She enjoys the role of PurushakAra..Purusham karOti iti purushakAra-one who moulds a purusha and makes him behave so..She does this for both jivAtma and paraAtma..Nammai arullaal thiruthukiraall..avanai anbaal thiru thukiraall.She corrects us by Her maternal  compassion and Him by Her love..

..Puru bahu sanOti ii purusha-one who grants abundantly is a purusha..He does that for most of the times..But when we sin, and do not go by the scriptures,He does not grand us–and hence needs Her to make Him as Purusha once again.She pleads by reminding the intimate relationship between ParamAtma  and jeevAtma..She expalains the responsibility of Him being the creator..If this does not work-  Avanai  anbaal thiruthum..she corrects Him by her beauty..Since He is in mad love with Her,He immediately accepts and forgives our sins..She also tells Him that if people are all  are virtuous they have no need to come to Him..If they have sinned, since they are  His creations, He need to take respnsibility and correct them and then accept them.

..We all jeevAmas are all purushas..He is purushothaman..In our case  the definition -one who takes a lead towards Him is a Purusha..If we falls back in going towards Him and get immersed in mandane materialistic world,we fail to be a purusha.. She ,with Her mercy mends us and makes us intereted in Him..Sita piraatti advised even the crual  Ravanna to fall at Rama’s feet so thar he will be pardoned.

..Thus she is a bridge between us and Him as in Omkara-a=narayaNa..u=lakshmi.and ma=jeevAtma..We can see thisphysically  at Srivilli puthoor  Divya Shedram in Renga mannar, Anndaal and Garudan -all sharing the same manndabam..Rama-Sita-Lakshmanan  all three walking in the forest is also another example of Omkaram itself walking..

.Sri -thus has six differant types of role to play ..1.srayatE-she resorts to bhagavan..2.srIyate-she is resorted to by all..3.srnOn-listens to our plea..4.srAvayati-she makes baghavan listen..5-srnAti-she destroys our sins.. and.. 6-srInati-reaches us to paramatma..This is the reason for the name kamalA–ka mou IAti iti kamalA-one who restores the lost JivA to its rightful owner and vice versa..It is like a barter trade.

..She resides in a separate sanctum-Thani Kovil Naatchiyaar..She is also by the sida of Him-Vubaya Naatchiyaars-Sridevi and Boodevi by the two sides of Him ..She is also on His chest..As soon as we recite all our sins to Her-maraikkaamal, marukkaamal, marakkaamal-and by the time we do pradakshinnam and reach Him,she beginsto perform  her job…she continues to do so when we reach Him and also tells Him in His ears.This is the reason for us to go through  Acharayas, Aazlvaars,Garuda  to  Thaayaar Sannithi first and then proceed to Him.

..SaranAgaty is to be done first to Her and then to Him..Raamanuja chose panguni utharam to do so and plead for all of us in his gadyam..Soorpanahai chose to go to Him first and lost her nose and breasts.Raavanna chose to go to her only and lost hid head. Kaakasuran, even though did more abachaarams than Raavanna escaped because of their joint presense during his  sarannagathi..

..Her forgiveness goes far beyond that of His. In Sanskrit it is called Varaha [ वराह], Vara means exalted,miha vuyarntha  aahhati means taking out or lifting up. kadalilirunthu thookki vittavan varahan..Since He took out the Mother Earth and lifted to a high position, He is Sri Varaha. There are many Varaha  shedrams..Adi Varaha, Moola Varaha, Kola Varaha, Yagna Varaha, Bhu Varaha and Varaha are the many names in those places for the Lord. Sri Mushnam is the Kshetram for Sri Varaha and it is a swayam vyakta Kshetram. Ramanuja’s Commentary  .Lord Krishna reveals that of cheaters His vibhuti or divine, transcendental opulence is gambling the art of plundering those who cheat. His vibhuti is victory for the victorious and His vibhuti is perseverance for the enterprising . The word sattvam refers to goodness and of those who are good, His vibhuti is the magnanimity and goodness they possesses.

Damayatam = among those who punish persons for breaching shastras, danda = punishment, asmi = I [Sri Krishna] am. Jigisatam = among those desirous of acieving success, niti = suceeding means or efforts. Guhyanam = among secrets, maunam = silence. Guhyam means all the methods employed to keep away matters from others. Jnanavatam = among those intellects interested in reaching Moksham, jnanam = knowledge, aham = I [Sri Krishna] am..

Ramanuja’s Commentary  ..Lord Krishna reveals that of damayatam or chastisers His vibhuti or divine, transcendental opulence is the rod of punishment that punishes those who are infringement of the law. Of those who seek to succeed in conflict His vibhuti is the expedient policy of reconciliation, dissension, bribery and dominance. Of all matters concerning secrecy His vibhuti is maunam or silence.

“Furthermore, O Arjuna, I am the generating seed of all existences. There is no being—moving or nonmoving—that can exist without Me.”

Yad = whatever, bijam = seed or origin of, sarva-bhutanam = everything [in this Universe], tad = that [seed or origin], aham = I [Sri Krishna] am, arjuna = [listen] Arjuna..Caracaram bhutam = in all things in Universe [chara = movable, achara = non-movable], maya vina = separated from or without Me [Sri Krishna], yat syat = if searched, na tad asti = there is nothing.

Ramanuja’s Commentary  ..The bijam or root seed in all things and all beings which causes their appearance in whatever condition they may exist are all manifested by the Supreme Lord Krishna. Whatever the composite total of all beings in all of existence without Lord Krishna’s manifestation as the atma or eternal soul within every living entity, there can be no possibility of existence in any manner of form. Lord Krishna exists in all things so this means that all things are always bonded to Him. It is evident from this that what is intended to be shown by samanadhi-karanya or co-existence of substance and attribute as one object is the reality of the Supreme Lord residing within all beings as the purely spiritual eternal soul. So it is apparent that all things have only their relative existences in relationship to the Supreme Lord.

“O mighty conqueror of enemies, there is no end to My divine manifestations. What I have spoken to you is but a mere indication of My infinite opulences.”

There is no end to His auspicious wealth. Na anta = no end, asti = is, mama = My [Sri Krishna’s], divyanam = auspicious, vibhutinam = wealth or property, parantapa = destroyer of enemies [Arjuna]. Arjuna feels that the Lord detailed His holdings in the last 19 slokas; so, how there can not be end to His property list? Esa tu = already, uddesata = approximately, maya =by Me [Sri Krishna], prokto = told, but, vibhuti = [Sri Krishna’s] wealth, vistara = details hava no end..etho oru muraiyal vargam sila sonneyn..vuthesamaha-muzluvathum solla mudiyaathu..motha perumaiyai solli mudiyaathu avanukkey sola mudiyaathu thanakkum than thanmai arivu ariyaan..allantha thiru kolam sevithu sothu yellaam avanathu.. 7 loham allanthathu, appuram veruyaaraavathu vanthu mitcham 4 lohamum konndaaduvaan yentru allanthu kaattinaan..

 

 

Ramanuja’s Commentary  .. Lord Krishna reveals that His vibhuti or divine, transcendental opulence is infinite without end and to account for them all is impossible as new ones are always manifesting. The ones that have been stated in this chapter are those that have manifested somehow or other with some restrictions and thus only give a limited perception.
