ஸஹ தாராங்கதாப்யாஂ து கத்வா ஸ ஹநுமாந்கபிஃ.
ஸுக்ரீவேண யதோத்திஷ்டஂ தஂ தேஷமுபசக்ரமே৷৷4.48.1৷৷
கபிஃ monkey, ஹநுமாந் Hanuman, தாராங்கதாப்யாஂ ஸஹ along with Tara and Angada, கத்வா ஸா going, ஸுக்ரீவேண by Sugriva, யதோத்திஷ்டம் as instructed, தம் them, தேஷம் place, உபப்ரசக்ரமே started.
Hanuman, the monkey accompanied by Tara and Angada proceeded as instructed by Sugriva in the (South) direction.
ஸ து தூரமுபாகம்ய ஸர்வைஸ்தை: கபிஸத்தமைஃ.
விசிநோதி ஸ்ம விந்த்யஸ்ய குஹாஷ்ச கஹநாநி ச৷৷4.48.2৷৷
பர்வதாக்ராந்நதீதுர்காந்ஸராஂஸி விபுலாந்த்ருமாந்.
வரிக்ஷஷண்டாஂஷ்ச விவிதாந்பர்வதாந்கநபாதபாந்৷৷4.48.3৷৷
ஸஃ that, ஸர்வைஃ தைஃ they all, கபிஸத்தமைஃ with heroic monkeys, தூரம் a distant place, உபாகம்ய having gone, ததஃ then, விந்த்யஸ்ய Vindhya’s, குஹாஷ்ச caves, கஹநாநி ச impenetrable, விசிநோதி searched, பர்வதாக்ராந் on the peaks of mountains, நதீதுர்காந் inaccessible fortress surrounded by rivers, ஸராஂஸி tanks, விபுலாந்த்ருமாந் huge trees, வரிக்ஷஷண்டாஂஷ்ச collection of trees, விவிதாந் many, பர்வதாந் mountains, கநபாதபாந் dense trees.
He went a long distance with other heroic monkeys, searching in the impenetrable caves of Vindhya mountain. They combed interior places, mountain peaks, fortresses surrounded by rivers, lakes, extensive groves of trees, bushes and thickets.
அந்வேஷமாணாஸ்தே ஸர்வே வாநராஸ்ஸர்வதோ திஷம்.
ந ஸீதாஂ ததரிஷுர்வீரா மைதிலீஂ ஜநகாத்மஜாம்৷৷4.48.4৷৷
வீராஃ heroes, தே வாநராஃ the vanaras, ஸர்வே all, ஸர்வதோ திஷம் all over in that direction, அந்வேஷமாணாஃ went searching, மைதிலீம் for Maithili, ஜநகாத்மஜாம் Janaka’s daughter, ஸீதாம் Sita, ந ததரிஷுஃ they did not see.
The heroic monkeys went searching all over the direction for the daughter of Janaka, but in vain.
தே பக்ஷயந்தோ மூலாநி பலாநி விவிதாநி ச.
அந்வேஷமாணா துர்தர்ஷாந்யவஸஂ ஸ்தத்ர தத்ர ஹ৷৷4.48.5৷৷
துர்தர்ஷாஃ unassailable, தே those, விவிதாநி many, மூலாநி roots, பலாந்யபி and also fruits, பக்ஷயந்தஃ eating, அந்வேஷமாணாஃ searching, தத்ர தத்ர here and there, ந்யவஸந் dwelt.
The unassailable monkeys ate roots and fruits and halted here and there at different places searching for Sita.
ஸ து தேஷோ துரந்வேஷோ குஹாகஹநவாந்மஹாந்.
நிர்ஜலஂ நிர்ஜநஂ ஷூந்யஂ கஹநஂ ரோமஹர்ஷணம்৷৷4.48.6৷৷
குஹாகஹநவாந் a location with impenetrable caves, மஹாந் great, ஸஃ தேஷஃ that place, துரந்வேஷஃ is difficult to search, நிர்ஜலம் with no water, நிர்ஜநம் no people, ஷூந்யம் desolate, கஹநம் impassable, ரோமஹர்ஷணம் terrific.
They searched in dense forests, interior locations impassable, desolate and terrific, without water, and people.
த்யக்த்வா து தஂ ததா தேஷஂ ஸர்வே வை ஹரியூதபாஃ.
தாதரிஷாந்யப்யரண்யாநி விசித்ய பரிஷபீடிதாஃ৷৷4.48.7৷৷
தேஷமந்யஂ துராதர்ஷஂ விவிஷு ஷ்சாகுதோ பயாஃ.
தாதரிஷாநி such of those, அரண்யாந்யபி even in the forests, விசித்ய having searched, பரிஷபீடிதாஃ very difficult, ஸர்வே all, ஹரியூதபாஃ vanara leaders, ததஃ then, தஂ தேஷம் that place, த்யக்த்வா after leaving, அகுதோபயாஃ fearless warriors, துராதர்ஷம் unassailable, அந்யஂ தேஷம் other places, விவிஷுஃ entered.
Having searched all over in the forests and very difficult areas, the fearless, invincible vanaras moved forward, leaving that place and entered another area-searching.
யத்ர வந்த்யபலா வரிக்ஷா விபுஷ்பாஃ பர்ணவர்ஜிதாஃ৷৷4.48.8৷৷
நிஸ்தோயாஸ்ஸரிதோ யத்ர மூலஂ யத்ர ஸுதுர்லபம்.
யத்ர where, வரிக்ஷாஃ trees, வந்த்யபலாஃ without fruits, விபுஷ்பாஃ without flowers, பர்ணவர்ஜிதாஃ without leaves, யத்ர where, ஸரிதஃ rivers, நிஸ்தோயாஃ without water, யத்ர there, மூலம் root, ஸுதுர்லபம் very difficult to get.
As they marched forward, they entered a location where there were trees devoid of leaves, flowers and fruits and rivers without water and a place where it was difficult to get roots (for food).
ந ஸந்தி மஹிஷா யத்ர ந மரிகா ந ச ஹஸ்திநஃ৷৷4.48.9৷৷
ஷார்தூலாஃ பக்ஷிணோ வாபி யே சாந்யே வநகோசராஃ.
யத்ர where, மஹிஷாஃ buffaloes, ந ஸந்தி not found, மரிகாஃ deer, ந not, ஹஸ்திநஃ elephants, ஷார்தூலாஃ tigers, பக்ஷிணோ வாபி and even birds, வநகோசராஃ forest beasts, யே those, அந்யே ச and other, ந not,
There were no buffaloes, no deer, no elephants, tigers or even birds and other wild animals.
ந யத்ரவரிக்ஷா நௌஷத்யோ ந வல்ல்யோ நாபி வீருதஃ৷৷4.48.10৷৷
ஸ்நிக்தபத்ராஸ்ஸ்தலே யத்ர பத்மிந்யஃ புல்லபங்கஜாஃ.
ப்ரேக்ஷணீயாஸ்ஸுகந்தாஷ்ச ப்ரமரைஷ்சாபிவர்ஜிதாஃ৷৷4.48.11৷৷
யத்ர where, வரிக்ஷாஃ trees, ந not, ஓஷத்யஃ medicinal plants, ந not, வல்ல்யஃ vines, ந not, வீருதஃ creepers spreading on ground, ந not, யத்ர where, ஸ்நிக்தபத்ராஃ shining leaves, ஸ்தலே on the dry ground, பத்மிந்யஃ lotus creepers, புல்லபங்கஜாஃ in full bloom, ப்ரேக்ஷணீயாஃ beautiful to look, ஸுகந்தாஷ்ச fragrant ones, ப்ரமரைஷ்சாபிவர்ஜிதாஃ devoid of bees.
There were no medicinal plants, no vines or creepers spreading on the ground.The lotus creepers on the dry ground had shining leaves,beautiful and fragrant blooms devoid of bees.
கண்டுர்நாம மஹாபாகஸ்ஸத்யவாதீ தபோதநஃ.
மஹர்ஷிஃ பரமாமர்ஷீ நியமைர்துஷ்ப்ரதர்ஷணஃ৷৷4.48.12৷৷
ஸத்யவாதீ truthful, மஹாபாகஃ an eminent acsetic, தபோதநஃ rich in penance, பரமாமர்ஷீ choleric tempered, நியமைஃ strict follower of austerities, துஷ்ப்ரதர்ஷணஃ outrageous, கண்டுர்நாம called Kandu, மஹர்ஷிஃ sage.
There was a sage called Kandu who was truthful, outrageous and short-tempered. He observed strict austerities and was rich in penance.
தஸ்ய தஸ்மிந்வநே புத்ரோ பாலஷ்ஷோடஷவார்ஷிகஃ.
ப்ரணஷ்டோ ஜீவிதாந்தாய க்ருத்தஸ்தத்ர மஹாமுநிஃ৷৷4.48.13৷৷
தஸ்மிந் வநே in that forest, தஸ்ய his, ஷோடஷவார்ஷிகஃ sixteen years old, புத்ரஃ son, பால: young boy, தத்ர there, ஜீவிதாந்தாய died, ப்ரணஷ்டஃ was lost, மஹாமுநிஃ great sage, க்ருத்தஃ enraged.
The great sage was enraged because he had lost his sixteen-year-old son in the forest.
தேந தர்மாத்மநா ஷப்தஂ கரித்ஸ்நஂ தத்ரமஹத்வநம்.
அஷரண்யஂ துராதர்ஷஂ மரிகபக்ஷிவிவர்ஜிதம்৷৷4.48.14৷৷
தத்ர there, மஹத் great, கரித்ஸ்நம் entire, வநம் forest, அஷரண்யம் barren, துராதர்ஷம் unfit to harbour, மரிகபக்ஷிவிவர்ஜிதம் without beasts and birds, தேந by him, தர்மாத்மநா by the righteous sage, ஷப்தம் cursed.
Cursed by the great righteous sage the entire forest turned barren, unfit to harbour living beings and became devoid of even beasts and birds.
தஸ்ய தே காநநாந்தாஷ்ச கிரீணாஂ கந்தராணி ச.
ப்ரபவநி நதீநாஂ ச விசிந்வந்தி ஸமாஹிதாஃ৷৷4.48.15৷৷
தே those, ஸமாஹிதாஃ those with concentrated attention, தஸ்ய his, காநநாந்தாஷ்ச forest regions, கிரீணாம் in the mountains, கந்தராணி ச caves also, நதீநாம் ப்ரபவாநி ச sources of rivers also, விசிந்வந்தி searched.
The monkeys searched in the forest regions, in the mountains, rivers and sources of rivers with concentrated attention.
தத்ர சாபி மஹாத்மாநோ நாபஷ்யஞ்ஜநகாத்மஜாம்.
ஹர்தாரஂ ராவணஂ வாபி ஸுக்ரீவப்ரியகாரிணஃ৷৷4.48.16৷৷
மஹாத்மாநஃ great souls, ஸுக்ரீவப்ரியகாரிணஃ eager to please Sugriva, தத்ர சாபி and there also, ஜநகாத்மஜாம் daughter of Janaka, ஹர்தாரம் one who has abducted, ராவணஂ வாபி Ravana also, நாபஷ்யந் could not see.
Eager to please Sugriva, the great souls searched in the forest region. Even there they could not find Janaka’s daughter and also Ravana who had abducted Sita.
தே ப்ரவிஷ்யாஷு தஂ பீமஂ லதாகுல்மஸமாவரிதம்.
தத்தரிஷுஃ க்ரூரகர்மாணமஸுரஂ ஸுரநிர்பயம்৷৷4.48.17৷৷
தே they, லதாகுல்மஸமாவரிதம் covered with creepers and bushes, க்ரூரம் dreadful, தம் that, ப்ரவிஷ்ய entering, ஆஷு immediately, க்ரூரகர்மாணம் one of wicked deeds, ஸுரநிர்பயம் not even afraid of gods, அஸுரம் demon, தத்தரிஷுஃ they saw.
(Then) they noticed a place covered with creepers and bushes. As soon as they entered the dreadful forest, they saw a demon of wicked deeds, unafraid even of gods.
தஂ தரிஷ்ட்வா வாநரா கோரஂ ஸ்திதஂ ஷைலமிவாபரம்.
காடஂ பரிஹிதாஸ்ஸர்வே தரிஷ்ட்வா தாந்பர்வதோபமமாந்৷৷4.48.18৷৷
ஸர்வே all, வாநராஃ monkeys, ஷைலம் இவ like a mountain, ஸ்திதம் stood, கோரம் dreadful, தம் they, அபரம் another, தரிஷ்ட்வா saw, பர்வதோபமம் like a huge mountain, தம் him, தரிஷ்ட்வா saw, கடாம் firmly, பரிஹிதாஃ stood in attention.
The monkeys beheld the dreadful demon standing firmly like a huge, incomparable mountain in front of them.
ஸோபி தாந்வாநராந்ஸர்வாந் நஷ்டா ஸ்ஸ்தேத்யப்ரவீத்பலீ.
அப்யதாவத ஸங்கரித்தோ முஷ்டிமுத்யம்ய ஸஂஹிதம்৷৷4.48.19৷৷
ஸோபி he also, நஷ்டாஃ killed, ஸ்த you are, இதி thus, தாந் them, ஸர்வாந் all, வாநராந் monkeys, அப்ரவீத் said, ஸங்கரித்தஃ enraged, ஸஂஹிதம் held, முஷ்டிம் the fist, உத்யம்ய raising, அப்யதாவத ran towards them.
Seeing the monkeys, the infuriated demon ran towards them, raising his fist firmly, saying, ‘You are all as good as dead, now that I have caught you.’
தமாபதந்தஂ ஸஹஸா வாலிபுத்ரோங்கதஸ்ததா.
ராவணோயமிதி ஜ்ஞாத்வா தலேநாபிஜகாந ஹ৷৷4.48.20৷৷
ததா then, வாலிபுத்ரஃ Vali’s son, அங்கதஃ Angada, ஆபதந்தம் pouncing, தம் them, அயம் this
person, ராவணஃ is Ravana, இதி thus, ஜ்ஞாத்வா on thinking, ஸஹஸா at once, தலேந with his palm, அபிஜகாந ஹ slapped him.
Mistaking him for Ravana, Angada, Vali’s son at once pounced on him and slapped him with his palm.
ஸ வாலிபுத்ராபிஹதோ வக்த்ராச்சோணிதமுத்வமந்.
அஸுரோப்யபதத்பூமௌ பர்யஸ்த இவ பர்வதஃ৷৷4.48.21৷৷
வாலிபுத்ராபிஹதஃ struck by the son of Vali, ஸஃ அஸுரஃ that demon, வக்த்ராத் from the mouth, ஷோணிதம் blood, உத்வமந் vomitting, பர்யஸ்தஃ uprooted, பர்வதஃ இவ like a mountain, பூமௌ on the ground, அப்யபதத் overturned.
Struck by Vali’s son, the demon vomitting blood from the mouth, fell down on the ground like a mountain, uprooted.
தேபி தஸ்மிந்நிருச்சவாஸே வாநரா ஜிதகாஷிநஃ.
வ்யசிந்வந்ப்ராயஷஸ்தத்ர ஸர்வஂ தத்கிரிகஹ்வரம்৷৷4.48.22৷৷
தஸ்மிந் his, நிருச்சவாஸே he breathed his last, ஜிதகாஷிநஃ vanaras who won him, தே they, தத்ர there, ப்ராயஷஃ probably, ஸர்வம் all over, தத் that, கிரிகஹ்வரம் mountain cave, வ்யசிந்வந் searched, அபி also.
He breathed his last, and the monkeys who won went searching almost all over the mountain caves.
விசிதஂ து ததஃ கரித்வா ஸர்வே தே காநநஂ புநஃ.
அந்யதேவாபரஂ கோரஂ விவிஷுர்கிரிகஹ்வரம்৷৷4.48.23৷৷
ஸர்வே all, தே they, காநநஂ புநஃ again in the forest, விசிதம் searched, கரித்வா having done, ததஃ then, அந்யதேவ a different, கோரம் dreadful, அபரம் another, கிரிகஹ்வரம் mountain cave, விவிஷுஃ entered.
Again they searched the forest and entered another dreadful mountain cave.
தே விசித்ய புநஃ கிந்நா விநிஷ்பத்ய ஸமாகதாஃ.
ஏகாந்தே வரிக்ஷமூலே து நிஷேதுர்தீநமாநஸாஃ৷৷4.48.24৷৷
தே they, புநஃ again, கிந்நாஃ ever sad, விநிஷ்பத்ய having searched, ஸமாகதாஃ collected together, தீநமாநஸாஃ those dejected at heart, ஏகாந்தே in a secluded corner, வரிக்ஷமூலே under a tree, நிஷேதுஃ sat down.
Having searched again, the disappointed monkeys collected together under a tree, dejected at heart and sat down in silence.
