[Sugriva narrates the fight between Dundubhi and Vali and explains how he has come to acquire knowledge of geogrphy of all quarters]
கதேஷு வாநரேந்த்ரேஷு ராமஸ்ஸுக்ரீவமப்ரவீத்.
கதஂ பவாந்விஜாநீதே ஸர்வஂ வை மண்டலஂ புவஃ৷৷4.46.1৷৷
வாநரேந்த்ரேஷு when the monkey chieftains, கதேஷு had gone, ராமஃ Rama, ஸுக்ரீவம் to Sugriva, அப்ரவீத் said, பவாந் you, புவஃ of the earth, ஸர்வம் entire, மண்டலம் region, கதம் how, விஜாநீதே do you know
When the chieftains of the monkeys left, Rama enquired Sugriva, how he had come to know the regions of the entire earth (which is a mandala. a circular form).
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்து ததோ ராமமுவாச ப்ரணதாத்மவாந்.
ஷ்ரூயதாஂ ஸர்வமாக்யாஸ்யே விஸ்தரேண நரர்ஷப!৷৷4.46.2৷৷
ததஃ then, ஸுக்ரீவஃ Sugriva, ப்ரணதாத்மவாந் offered reverential salutation, ராமம் to Rama, உவாச spoke, ஸர்வம் all, விஸ்தரேண in detail, ஆக்யாஸ்யே narrate, நரர்ஷப! O Rama, ஷ்ரூயதாம் listen.
Then offering reverential salutation to Rama, Sugriva said, ‘I shall narrate in detail. Listen, O bull among men !
யதா து துந்துபிஂ நாம தாநவஂ மஹிஷாகரிதிம்.
பரிகாலயதே வாலீ மலயஂ ப்ரதி பர்வதம்৷৷4.46.3৷৷
ததா விவேஷ மஹிஷோ மலயஸ்ய குஹாஂ ப்ரதி.
விவேஷ வாலீ தத்ராபி மலயஂ தஜ்ஜிகாஂஸயா৷৷4.46.4৷৷
வாலீ Vali, மஹிஷாகரிதிம் in buffalo form, துந்துபிஂ நாம named Dundubhi, தாநவம் demon, யதா when, மலயஂ பர்வதஂ ப்ரதி till the mount Malaya, ப்ரதிகாலயதே wished to kill him, ததா then, மஹிஷஃ buffalo, மலயஸ்ய Malaya’s, குஹாஂ ப்ரதி towards the cave, விவேஷ entered, வாலீ Vali, தஜ்ஜிகாஂஸயா with the intention of killing him, தத்ராபி into that, மலயம் Malaya, விவேஷ entered.
Vali chased the demon Dundubhi in buffalo form into a cave of mount Malaya in order to kill him.
ததோஹஂ தத்ர நிக்ஷிப்தோ குஹாத்வாரி விநீதவத்.
ந ச நிஷ்க்ராமதே வாலீ ததா ஸஂவத்ஸரே கதே4.46.5৷৷
ததஃ then, விநீதவத் with due loyalty, அஹம் I, தத்ர there, குஹாத்வாரி நிக்ஷிப்தஃ I was made to wait at the entrance of the cave, ததா then, ஸஂவத்ஸரே when a year, கதே passed, வாலீ Vali, ந நிஷ்க்ராமதே not returned.
‘Then I waited at the entrance of the cave with due loyalty. A year passed. Yet Vali did not return.
ததஃ க்ஷதஜவேகேந ஆபுபூரே ததா பிலம்.
ததஹஂ விஸ்மிதோ தரிஷ்ட்வா ப்ராதரிஷோகவிஷார்திதஃ৷৷4.46.6৷৷
ததஃ then, பிலம் cave, க்ஷதஜவேகேந with the speed of the gushing blood, ஆபுபூரே filled with, ததா then, அஹம் I, தத் that, தரிஷ்ட்வா after seeing, விஸ்மிதஃ bewildered, ப்ராதுஃ brother, ஷோகவிஷார்திதஃ suffered intense agony.
‘There seeing the cave overflowing with the gushing blood, I was bewildered, thinking that my brother might have been killed. I suffered intense agony.
அதாஹஂ கரிதபுத்திஸ்து ஸுவ்யக்தஂ நிஹதோ குருஃ.
ஷிலா பர்வதஸங்காஷா பிலத்வாரி மயா கரிதா৷৷4.46.7৷৷
அஷக்நுவ ந்நிஷ்க்ரமிதுஂ மஹிஷோ விநஷேதிதி.
அத then, குருஃ brother Vali, ஸுவ்யக்தம் it is evident, நிஹதஃ killed, அஹம் I, கரிதபுத்திஃ I thought, மஹிஷஃ buffalo, நிஷ்க்ரமிதும் to return, அஷக்நுவந் being unable, விநஷேதிதி should be destroyed, மயா by myself, பர்வதஸங்காஷா of the mountain size, ஷிலா rock, பிலத்வாரி at the entrance of, கரிதா placed.
‘Thereafter, convinced that my brother was killed, I placed a mountain-size rock at the entrance of the cave so that Dundubhi will be destroyed, unable to come out of the cave.
ததோஹமாகாஂ கிஷ்கிந்தாஂ நிராஷஸ்தஸ்ய ஜீவிதே৷৷4.46.8৷৷
ராஜ்யஂ ச ஸுமஹத்ப்ராப்ய தாரயா ருமயா ஸஹ.
மித்ரைஷ்ச ஸஹிதஸ்தத்ர வஸாமி விகதஜ்வரஃ৷৷4.46.9৷৷
ததஃ then, அஹம் I, தஸ்ய his, ஜீவிதே about his life, நிராஷஃ lost hope, கிஷ்கிந்தாம் to Kishkinda, ஆகாம் I came, ஸுமஹத் great, ராஜ்யஂ ச kingdom also, ருமயா ஸஹ with Ruma, தார யா with Tara, ப்ராப்ய having got, தத்ர there, மித்ரைஃ with friends, ஸஹிதஃ accompanied, விகதஜ்வரஃ fearlessly, வஸாமி I lived.
‘I lost hope of his life and came back to Kishkinda. Having got the kingdom, and also Ruma and Tara, I was anointed king and ruled it fearlessly with all friends.
ஆஜகாம ததோ வாலீ ஹத்வா தஂ தாநவர்ஷபம்.
ததோஹமததாஂ ராஜ்யஂ கௌரவாத்பயயந்த்ரிதஃ৷৷4.46.10৷৷
ததஃ then, தாநவர்ஷபம் bull among monsters வாலீ Vali, தம் him, ஹத்வா after killing, ஆஜகாம he came, ததஃ then, அஹம் I, பயயந்த்ரிதஃ constrained with fear, கௌரவாத் with respect, ராஜ்யம் kingdom, அததாம் returned.
ஸ மாஂ ஜிகாஂஸுர்துஷ்டாத்மா வாலீ ப்ரவ்யதிதேந்த்ரியஃ.
பரிகாலயதே க்ரோதாத்தாவந்தஂ ஸசிவைஸ்ஸஹ৷৷4.46.11৷৷
துஷ்டாத்மா evil-minded, ஸஃ வாலீ that Vali, ப்ரவ்யதிதேந்த்ரியஃ having lost control over his senses, ஸசிவைஸ்ஸஹ along with ministers, தாவந்தம் while I was running, மாம் me, ஜிகாஂஸுஃ to kill, க்ரோதாத் enraged, பரிகாலயதே ran after me.
‘The evil-minded Vali, having lost his self-control, ran after me in anger, to kill me and my ministers. I kept running.
ததோஹஂ வாலிநா தேந ஸாநுபத்தஃ ப்ரதாவிதஃ.
நதீஷ்ச விவிதாஃ பஷ்யந்வநாநி நகராணி ச৷৷4.46.12৷৷
ததஃ then, தேந by him, வாலிநா by Vali, அநுபத்தஃ chased, ஸஃ அஹம் that I was, விவிதாஃ many, நதீஃ rivers, வநாநி forests, நகராணி ச towns, பஷ்யந் while seeing, ப்ரதாவிதஃ I ran.
ஆதர்ஷதலஸங்காஷா ததோ வை பரிதிவீ மயா.
அலாதசக்ரப்ரதிமா தரிஷ்டா கோஷ்பதவத்ததா৷৷4.46.13৷৷
ததஃ then, மயா by me, பரிதிவீ the earth, ஆதர்ஷதலஸங்காஷா like the surface of a mirror, அலாதசக்ரப்ரதிமா like a circling of fire-band, தரிஷ்டா seen, கோஷ்பதவத் as though it is of the size of cow’s hoof, ததா then.
பூர்வாஂ திஷஂ ததோ கத்வா பஷ்யாமி விவிதாந் த்ருமாந்.
பர்வதந்ஷ்ச நதீ ரம்யாஸ்ஸராஂஸி விவிதாநி ச৷৷4.46.14৷৷
ததஃ then, பூர்வாஂ திஷம் eastern quarter, கத்வா after going, விவிதாந் several, த்ருமாந் trees, நதீந் rivers, ரம்யாந் delighting, பர்வதாந் mountains, விவிதாநி many, ஸராஂஸி ச lakes also, பஷ்யாமி see (saw).
‘Then I ran in the eastern direction and saw many trees, lakes, rivers and beautiful mountains.
உதயஂ தத்ர பஷ்யாமி பர்வதஂ தாதுமண்டிதம்.
க்ஷீரோதஂ ஸாகரஂ சைவ நித்யமப்ஸரஸாலயம்৷৷4.46.15৷৷
தத்ர there, தாதுமண்டிதம் embellished with minerals, உதயஂ பர்வதம் mountain behind which the Sun rises, நித்யம் always, அப்ஸரஸாலயம் frequented by apsaras, க்ஷீரோதஂ ஸாகரஂ சைவ the milky ocean also, பஷ்யாமி see (saw).
‘There I saw, filled with minerals the mountain behind which the Sun rises and the milky ocean frequented by the apsaras.
பரிகாலயமாநஸ்து வாலிநாபித்ருத ஸ்ததா.
புநராவரித்ய ஸஹஸா ப்ரஸ்திதோஹஂ ததா விபோ!৷৷4.46.16৷৷
விபோ! O king, வாலிநா by Vali, பரிகாலயமாநஃ chased away, அஹம் I, ததா then, அபித்ருதஃ I ran, ததா then, புநஃ again, ஆவரித்ய I turned back, ஸஹஸா at once, ப்ரஸ்திதஃ I left.
‘O king! chased thus by Vali, I ran and turned back and ran again-fast.
புநராவர்தமாநஸ்து வாலிநாபித்ருதோத்ருதம்.
திஷஸ்தஸ்யாஸ்ததோ பூயஃ ப்ரஸ்திதோ தக்ஷிணாஂ திஷம்.
விந்த்யபாதபஸங்கீர்ணாஂ சந்தநத்ருமஷோபிதாம்৷৷4.46.17৷৷
புநஃ again, ஆவர்தமாநஃ changing, வலிநா by Vali, த்ருதம் fast, அபித்ருதஃ chased, ததஃ then, தஸ்யாஃ that, திஷஃ direction, பூயஃ turned, விந்த்யபாதபஸங்கீர்ணாம் filled with the mountains of Vindhya and trees, சந்தநத்ருமஷோபிதாம் filled with beautiful sandal trees, தக்ஷிணாஂ திஷம் southern quarter, ப்ரஸ்திதஃ ran.
‘Then chased by Vali, I changed my present direction from the east towards the southern quarter where Vindhya mountain stood with its, beautiful sandal trees.
த்ருமஷைலாஂஸ்ததஃ பஷ்யந்பூயோ தக்ஷிணதோபராம்.
பஷ்சிமாஂ ச திஷஂ ப்ராப்தா வாலிநா ஸமபித்ருதஃ৷৷4.46.18৷৷
த்ருமஷைலாஂ trees and mountains, தக்ஷிணதஃ from the southern quarter, அபராம் another, பஷ்யந் while seeing, பூயஃ again, வாலிநா by Vali, ஸமபித்ருதஃ chased, பஷ்சிமாஂ திஷம் western quarter, ப்ராப்தாஃ I reached.
‘I was looking at the trees and mountains in the southern direction, I reached the western quarter pursued by Vali.
ஸம்பஷ்யந்விவிதாந்தேஷாநஸ்தஂ ச கிரிஸத்தமம்.
ப்ராப்ய சாஸ்தஂ கிரிஷ்ரேஷ்டமுத்தராஂ ஸம்ப்ரதாவிதஃ৷৷4.46.19৷৷
விவிதாந் many, தேஷாந் places, கிரிஸத்தமம் best of mountains, அஸ்தஂ ச where the Sun sets, பஷ்யந் while I was seeing, கிரிஷ்ரேஷ்டம் foremost of mountains, அஸ்தம் where the Sun sets, ப்ராப்ய having reached, உத்தராம் northern, ஸம்ப்ரதாவிதஃ ran.
‘Looking at the places around, I reached the best of mountains where the Sun sets (I found Vali still chasing me) and ran towards the north.
ஹிமவந்தஂ ச மேருஂ ச ஸமுத்ரஂ ச ததோத்தரம்.
யதா ந விந்தஂ ஷரணஂ வாலிநா ஸமபித்ருதஃ৷৷4.46.20৷৷
ததா மாஂ புத்திஸம்பந்நோ ஹநூமாந்வாக்யமப்ரவீத்.
ஹிமவந்தஂ ச Himavanta also, மேருஂ ச Meru also, ததா so also, உத்தரஂ ஸமுத்ரஂ ச even the northern sea, வாலிநா by Vali, ஸமபித்ருதஃ chased, யதா when, ஷரணம் protection, ந விந்தம் I did not get, ததா then, புத்திஸம்பந்நஃ wise, ஹநூமாந் Hanuman, மாம் to me, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
‘I saw Himavan and mount Meru on the north and the northern sea. Still pursued by Vali, I could not know where to go when wise Hanuman spoke to me these words:
இதாநீஂ மே ஸ்மரிதஂ ராஜந்யதா வாலீ ஹரீஷ்வரஃ৷৷4.46.21৷৷
மதங்கேந ததா ஷப்தோ ஹ்யஸ்மிந்நாஷ்ரமமண்டலே.
ப்ரவிஷேத்யதி வை வாலீ மூர்தாஸ்ய ஷததா பவேத்৷৷4.46.22৷৷
தத்ர வாஸஸ்ஸுகோஸ்மாகஂ நிருத்விக்நோ பவிஷ்யதி.
ராஜந் O king!, ஹரீஷ்வரஃ king of monkeys, வாலீ Vali, ததா then, மதங்கேந by Mathanga, யதா as, ஷப்தஃ cursed, மே to me, இதாநீம் now, ஸ்மரிதம் I remembered, வாலீ Vali, அஸ்மிந் in this, ஆஷ்ரமமண்டலே hermitage site, ப்ரவிஷேத்யதி if he enters, அஸ்ய his, மூர்தா head, ஷததா hundred pieces, பவேத் will become, தத்ர there, அஸ்மாகம் to us, வாஸஃ residence, ஸுகஃ happy, நிருத்விக்நஃ peaceful, பவிஷ்யதி will be.
‘I remembed Matanga’s curse to Vali, king of monkeys. Vali would not enter the site of Matanga’s hermitage as his head would break into a hundred pieces if he did’. Therefore we thought it would be safe for us to reside in that place.
ததஃ பர்வதமாஸாத்ய றஷ்யமூகஂ நரிபாத்மஜ!৷৷4.46.23৷৷
ந விவேஷ ததா வாலீ மதங்கஸ்ய பயாத்ததா.
நரிபாத்மஜ O prince Rama!, ததஃ from that place, றஷ்யமூகஂ பர்வதம் mountain Rishyamuka, ததா then, ஆஸாத்ய having reached, வாலீ Vali, மதங்கஸ்ய Matanga’s, பயாத் out of fear of, ததா then, ந விவேஷ did not enter.
‘O prince Rama! then I reached mount Rishyamuka which Vali did not enter out of fear
of the curse of Matanga.
ஏவஂ மயா ததா ராஜந்ப்ரத்யக்ஷமுபலக்ஷிதம்৷৷4.46.24৷৷
பரிதிவீமண்டலஂ கரித்ஸ்நஂ குஹாமஸ்யாகதஸ்ததஃ.
ராஜந் king, ஏவம் in that manner, ததா then, கத்ஸ்நம் பரிதிவீமண்டலம் entire earth, ப்ரத்யக்ஷம் saw directly, மயா by me, உபலக்ஷிதம் is surveyed, குஹாம் this cave, ததஃ thereafter, ஆகதஃ reached, அஸ்மி I am.
‘O king! that way I surveyed the entire earth directly and returned to this cave and lived here.
