Sumantra relates the story of sage Rsyash ringa to Dasaratha- tells him he would get sons
after performance of a sacrifice by Rsyash ringa–Dasaratha plans to get Rsyash ringa to Ayodhya.]
ஏதச்ச்ருத்வா ரஹஸ்ஸூதோ ராஜாநமிதமப்ரவீத்.
றத்விக்பிருபதிஷ்டோயஂ புராவரித்தோ மயா ஷ்ருத:৷৷1.9.1৷৷
ஏதத் this matter, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, ஸூத: king’s charioteer, ராஜாநம் addressing king, ரஹ: in privacy,
இதம் these words, அப்ரவீத் said, றத்விக்பிஃ by officiating priests, உபதிஷ்ட: advised, அயம் this solution,
புரா ancient, வரித்த: happened, மயா ஷ்ருத: heard by me.
The charioteer tells the king in privacy that he has heard the advice given by the officiating priests.

ஸநத்குமாரோ பகவாந்பூர்வஂ கதிதவாந்கதாம்.
றஷீணாஂ ஸந்நிதௌ ராஜந்! தவ புத்ராகமஂ ப்ரதி৷৷1.9.2৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, பகவாந் possessing divinity, ஸநத்குமார: Sanatkumara, தவ your, புத்ராகமஂ ப்ரதி about the birth of your sons,
கதாம் story, றஷீணாஂ ஸந்நிதௌ in the presence of sages, பூர்வம் earlier, கதிதவாந் narrated.
“O king, the divine Sanatkumara had narrated a story about your posterity in the presence of sages.

காஷ்யபஸ்யது புத்ரோஸ்தி விபண்டக இதி ஷ்ருத:.
றஷ்யஷரிங்க இதி க்யாதஸ்தஸ்ய புத்ரோ பவிஷ்யதி৷৷1.9.3৷৷
காஷ்யபஸ்ய for Kasyapa, விபண்டக: இதி named Vibhandaka, ஷ்ருத: famous, புத்ர: அஸ்தி has a son,
தஸ்ய for him, றஷ்யஷரிங்க இதி named Rsyash ringa, க்யாத: well-known, புத்ர: son பவிஷ்யதி will be born.
Kasyapa has a famous son named Vibhandaka. It was prophesied that he would have a son named Rsyash ringa.

ஸ வநே நித்யஸஂவரித்தோ முநிர்வநசரஸ்ஸதா .
நாந்யஂ ஜாநாதி விப்ரேந்த்ரோ நித்யஂ பித்ரநுவர்தநாத் ৷৷1.9.4৷৷
வநே in the forest, நித்யஸஂவரித்த: grown up, ஸதா always, வநசர: a person moving in the forest,
விப்ரேந்த்ர: foremost among brahmins, ஸ: முநி: that sage, நித்யம் always,
பித்ரநுவர்தநாத் by following his father, அந்யம் others, ந ஜாநாதி will not know.
Grown up in the forest and always moving with his father, that sage knows none other than his father.

த்வைவித்யஂ ப்ரஹ்மசர்யஸ்ய பவிஷ்யதி மஹாத்மந:.
லோகேஷு ப்ரதிதஂ ராஜந்விப்ரைஷ்ச கதிதஂ ஸதா৷৷1.9.5৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, மஹாத்மந: eminet one, லோகேஷு in the worlds, ப்ரதிதம் celebrated, ஸதா always,
விப்ரை: by brahmins, கதிதம் described, ப்ரஹ்மசர்யஸ்ய of Brahmacharya (life of celebacy),
த்வைவித்யம் two-fold, பவிஷ்யதி will happen.
O eminent king, sage Rsyasringa celebrated in the three worlds who practises a twofold
brahmacharya life (life of celebacy) described by brahmins (as vratitva and prajapatya).

தஸ்யைவஂ வர்தமாநஸ்ய காலஸ்ஸமபிவர்தத .
அக்நிஂ ஷுஷ்ரூஷமாணஸ்ய பிதரஂ ச யஷஸ்விநம்৷৷1.9.6৷৷
அக்நிம் fire-god, யஷஸ்விநம் enowned, பிதரம் ச his father also, ஷுஷ்ரூஷமாணஸ்ய while attending,
ஏவம் in this manner, வர்தமாநஸ்ய living, தஸ்ய for him, கால: time, ஸமபிவர்தத will be spent.
Worshipping the fire-god and attending on his renowned father, he will spend a long time
living in this manner (practising vratitva mode of brahmacharya).

ஏதஸ்மிந்நேவ காலே து ரோமபாத: ப்ரதாபவாந்.
அங்கேஷு ப்ரதிதோ ராஜா பவிஷ்யதி மஹாபல:৷৷ 1.9.7৷৷
ஏதஸ்மிந்நேவ காலே at this time, அங்கேஷு in the country of Anga, ப்ரதாபவாந் mighty,
மஹாபல: possessing great strength, ப்ரதித: celebrated, ரோமபாத: king Romapada, பவிஷ்யதி will be living.
At this time a powerful king Romapada, mighty and celebrated would be living in the country of Anga.

தஸ்ய வ்யதிக்ரமாத்ராஜ்ஞோ பவிஷ்யதி ஸுதாருணா .
அநாவரிஷ்டிஸ்ஸுகோரா வை ஸர்வபூதபயாவஹா ৷৷1.9.8৷৷
தஸ்ய that, ராஜ்ஞ: king, வ்யதிக்ரமாத் violation of code of conduct, ஸுதாருணா ஸுகோரா dreadful,
ஸர்வபூதபயாவஹா frightening all living beings, அநாவரிஷ்டி: drought, பவிஷ்யதி will set in.
Because of violation of code of conduct by the king, a terrible, dreadful drought frightening
all living beings will set in the kingdom.

அநாவரிஷ்ட்யாஂ து வரித்தாயாஂ ராஜா து:கஸமந்வித:.
ப்ராஹ்மணாந்ஷ்ருதவரித்தாஂஷ்ச ஸமாநீய ப்ரவக்ஷ்யதி৷৷ 1.9.9৷৷
அநாவரிஷ்ட்யாம் when drought, வரித்தாயாம் will be prevailing, ராஜா king, து:கஸமந்வித: filled with grief,
ஷ்ருதவரித்தாந் men who grow old by learning, ப்ராஹ்மணாந் brahmins, ஸமாநீய summoning, ப்ரவக்ஷ்யதி will say.
With drought prevailing, the grief-stricken king, would summon all those grown old with learning and tell them.

பவந்தஷ்ஷ்ருததர்மாணோ லோகசாரித்ரவேதிந: .
ஸமாதிஷந்து நியமஂ ப்ராயஷ்சித்தஂ யதா பவேத் ৷৷1.9.10৷৷
பவந்த: all of you, ஷ்ருததர்மாண: are conversant in duties (enjoined by scriptures),
லோகசாரித்ரவேதிந: well-versed in the ways of the world, யதா in whichever manner, ப்ராயஷ்சித்தம் expiation,
பவேத் happens, நியமம் religious observance, ஸமாதிஷந்து instruct.

வக்ஷ்யந்தி தே மஹீபாலஂ ப்ராஹ்மணா வேதபாரகா:.
விபண்டகஸுதஂ ராஜந்ஸர்வோபாயைரிஹாநய৷৷1.9.11৷৷
வேதபாரகா: those learned in vedas, தே ப்ராஹ்மணா: those brahmins, மஹீபாலம் addressing the king,
வக்ஷ்யந்தி will say, ராஜந் O king!, விபண்டகஸுதம் son of sage Vibhandaka, Rsyash ringa,
ஸர்வோபாயை: by all means, இஹ here, ஆநய bring.
Those brahmins versed in the Vedas, said, to ‘O king! bring here Rsyash ringa, son of the sage Vibhandaka by all means’.

ஆநாய்ய ச மஹீபால! றஷ்யஷரிங்கஂ ஸுஸத்கரிதம்.
ப்ரயச்ச கந்யாஂ ஷாந்தாஂ வை விதிநா ஸுஸமாஹித: ৷৷1.9.12৷৷
மஹீபால O! Monarch, ஸுஸத்கரிதம் greatly honoured, றஷ்யஷரிங்கம் Rsyash ringa, ஆநாய்ய having brought,
ஸமாஹித: with due reverence, கந்யாம் your daughter, ஷாந்தாம் Shanta, விதிநா according to religious ceremonies, ப்ரயச்ச offer.
“O monarch, on having brought Rsyash ringa here, honour him, and offer him your daughter Santa with due reverence.

தேஷாஂ து வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா ராஜா சிந்தாஂ ப்ரபத்ஸ்யதே .
கேநோபாயேந வை ஷக்ய இஹாநேதுஂ ஸ வீர்யவாந் ৷৷1.9.13৷৷
தேஷாம் their, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, ராஜா king, வீர்யவாந் with controlled senses,
ஸஃ he, இஹ here, ஆநேதும் to bring, கேந உபாயேந by what means, ஷக்ய: capable of being done,
சிந்தாம் contemplating, ப்ரபத்ஸ்யதே will obtain.
On hearing their words, the king in a thoughtful mood said, ‘How can the mighty sage be brought here’?

ததோ ராஜா விநிஷ்சித்ய ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபிராத்மவாந்.
புரோஹிதமமாத்யாஂஷ்ச தத: ப்ரேஷ்யதி ஸத்கரிதாந்৷৷1.9.14৷৷
தத: thereafter, ஆத்மவாந் intelligent, ராஜா king, மந்த்ரிபி: ஸஹ in consultation with his ministers,
விநிஷ்சித்ய having decided, தத: thereafter, ஸத்கரிதாந் duly honouring, புரோஹிதம் priest,
அமாத்யாஂஷ்ச counsellors, ப்ரேஷ்யதி send on a mission.
Thereafter the confident king, having decided, in consultation with his ministers to bring him (Rsyash ringa),
sent the priest with the counsellors on this mission.

தே து ராஜ்ஞோ வசஷ்ஷ்ருஷரித்வா வ்யதிதா விநதாநநா:.
ந கச்சேம றஷேர்பீதா அநுநேஷ்யந்தி தஂ நரிபம் ৷৷ 1.9.15৷৷
தே they, ராஜ்ஞ: king’s, வச: words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, றஷே: from the Rishi, பீதா: frightened,
வ்யதிதா: distressed, விநதாநநா: with faces bent down, ந கச்சேம we will not go, தம் that, நரிபம் king, அநுநேஷ்யந்தி will appeal.
On hearing the king’s words, distressed and frightened by rishi’s power,
they appealed to the king, faces bent down, ‘We will not go’.

வக்ஷ்யந்தி சிந்தயித்வா தே தஸ்யோபாயாஂஷ்ச தத்க்ஷமாந்.
ஆநேஷ்யாமோ வயஂ விப்ரஂ ந ச தோஷோ பவிஷ்யதி৷৷ 1.9.16৷৷
தே they, சிந்தயித்வா having thought about it, தத்க்ஷமாந் useful in bringing him, உபாயாந் means,
தஸ்ய தே for that king, வக்ஷ்யந்தி will tell, வயம் we, விப்ரம் that sage, ஆநேஷ்யாம: will bring,
தோஷ: blame, ந பவிஷ்யதி ச will not accrue.
After thinking about the means to be employed to bring the rishi to the court,
they told him they would bring the sage if they are not to blame (in case anything untoward happens).

ஏவமங்காதிபேநைவ கணிகாபி: றஷேஸ்ஸுத:.
ஆநீதோவர்ஷயத்தேவஷ்ஷாந்தா சாஸ்மை ப்ரதீயதே৷৷1.9.17৷৷
ஏவம் in this way, அங்காதிபேந by the king of Anga region, Romapada, கணிகாபி: with the help of courtesans,
றஷே: ஸுத: son of sage Vibhandaka, ஆநீத: was brought, தேவ: god (Indra), அவர்ஷயத் poured rains,
அஸ்மை for Rsyasringa, ஷாந்தா Shanta, ப்ரதீயதே ச will be offered.
Thus with the help of courtesans of the king of Anga, when the son of the sage (Rsyash ringa) was brought
rains followed. The king offered his daughter Santa (in marriage to the sage).

றஷ்யஷரிங்கஸ்து ஜாமாதா புத்ராஂஸ்தவ விதாஸ்யதி.
ஸநத்குமாரகதிதமேதாவத்வ்யாஹரிதஂ மயா৷৷1.9.18৷৷
ஜாமாதா son-in-law, றஷ்யஷரிங்கஸ்து Rsyasringa, தவ your, புத்ராந் sons, விதாஸ்யதி will ordain to be born,
ஏதாவத் till that instance, ஸநத்குமாரகதிதம் the account communicated by Sanatkumara, மயா by me, வ்யாஹரிதம் told to you.
‘Risyash ringa, your son-in-law, would help you to obtain sons’. Thus said Sanath kumara which I have related to you.

அத ஹரிஷ்டோ தஷரதஸ்ஸுமந்த்ரஂ ப்ரத்யபாஷத.
யதர்ஷ்யஷரிங்கஸ்த்வாநீதோ விஸ்தரேண த்வயோச்யதாம்৷৷1.9.19৷৷
அத now, ஹரிஷ்ட: pleased, தஷரத: king Dasaratha, ஸுமந்த்ரஂ ப்ரதி addressing Sumantra, அபாஷத spoke,
றஷ்யஷரிங்க: Rsyash ringa, யதா by whatever means, ஆநீத: was brought, த்வயா by you,
விஸ்தரேண in detail, உச்யதாம் be described.
Thereupon Dasaratha, pleased, (with him), said to Sumantra, “Describe in detail the means
by which Rsyash ringa was brought (to the court of Romapada)”.

இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத் ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே நவமஸ் ஸர்க:৷৷
