In the state of Tamilnadu, our acharyas have identified five divyadesams as Krishna Mangala Divyadesams and Tirukkannamangai is the fore most of all these. This is the 27th among the 108 divyadesams. Saint Tirumangai Alwar has glorified the lord of this temple in ten divine musings.
The Moolavar is the biggest and the tallest among all the 108 divyadesams. The Lord BAKTAVATSALAN has been praised by Thirumangai alwar as Perumburakadal, Pattharavi. Moolavar Thayar is known as KANNA MANGAI NAYAKI and Utsavar Thayar is called ABISHEKAVALLI. This is the birth place of Thiruakannamangai andan, the disciple of Sriman Nathamunigal.
The Alankara Mandapam is exquisite in its architecture and design and considered to be the Kalyana Mandapam of Perumal and Thayar. According to Sthala puranam, the Lord of this temple gave darshan to sage Markandeya and Varuna. In the inner walls of the sanctum sanctorum, there are sculptures of devas, sapta rishis and sankara. The divine wedding of Bakthavatsala Perumal with Kannamangai Nayaki was witnessed by Devas at this hallowed spot. Not satisfied with witnessing the marriage they wanted to stay here eternally to worship the Lord in this thirukolam. For this they took the form of bees and created a beehive so that they could stay here and worship him daily. There is a beehive in the sanctum sanctorum of the Goddess with thousands of bees swarming it. No one knows from when it has been there. The bees do not sting the devotees who visit the temple to worship the Lord.
The ten verses of thirumangai alwar about this perumal consists of wonderful pasurams where we can find the fluency of the alwar in singing tamil hymns. He says he is searching for several unusual things which he ultimately finds in thirukannamangai.
The last pasuram is as follws : “ Kannamangaiyul kandukoden enru kadhalal kalikanri urai seitha, Vannavontamil onbathodonrivai vallarai uraippar mathiyam thavazh, vinnil vinnavarai magizhweithuvar meimai sollil vensangamondrendiya kanna, nin thanakum kurippagil karkalam kaviyin porul thane “
It is said that the perumal wanted to know the meaning of the verses of thirumangai alwar, who replies that he can learn the same by following suitable procedure. i.e in the guru shishya bhavam. Our acharyas had observed that later the perumal gave birth as Periyavachan pillai (birth star : Avani Rohini – in the same star of Krishna) and learnt the vyakyanams of the pasurams by becoming the disciple of Nampillai( birth star – Karthigai karthigai- known as thirukalikanri dasar-incarnation of thirumangai alwar) and heard the vyakayanams of the pasurams under him.
Another important feature of this temple is that the Thiruvarasu of Tirukannamangai Andan is located in the second prakaram of the temple itself .During the Ra-pathu and pagal -pathu Utsavams, Tirukannamangai Andan is being honoured with thirumalai and thiruparivattam of the perumal while going round the prakaram everyday.
There is a big tank in front of the temple called Darshana pushkarani. It is said that Chandran in order to get redeemed from the curse of devas for having a relationship with tara Brahma asked Chandran to proceed to Darshana Pushkarani, in Thirukannamangai, and have a holy dip so that he could be expiate the suns. Chandran came here and had a darshan of the Darshana Pushkarani. Lo and behold! Even before he had a holy dip, just by having a darshan of the pushkarani, he was redeemed of his curse and regained all his powers. Thus, the sanctity and power of the pushkarani was established.
Now the renovation of the Vimanams of Perumal, Thayar , Andal , Raja Gopuram, VaikuntaVasal Gopuram, Perumal Sannadhi ,Thayar Sannadhi , Madapalli , Manavala Mamuni Sannadhi , Desigar Sannadhi, Alwar Sannathi , Garudalwar Sannathi and Anjaneyar Sannathi and the massive rampart wall have all been completed with the help of Donors.
The Maha Samprokshanam is fixed on 12th September. The Yagasala Homam commences on 8th Sepetember which is conducted for 5 days.
The recitation of Vedams and Divya prabandam and Tadiyaradhanam are to be arranged.

I don’t think he is biggest and tallest of all moolavars. Ulagalantha Perumal at Ooragam and Pandava Thoothar at Padakam are bigger and taller. Still, very beautiful though!!!
